Viewer research showed that the 'TWO' symbol had given BBC2 a 'dull' and 'worthy' image, so in order to change that, on 16th February 1991, something entirely new and different came along. After the shock of the new BBC1 globe that morning, BBC2's new idents were no less startling.
For the first time, there was a whole series of witty and arty idents, all featuring the same figure '2'. There were also countless special versions used for theme nights, seasons and special occasions, and even more short stings used between trailers.
We start with the original set of idents. Paper Cut-Out, which was withdrawn from use relatively early on, is missing from this collection. Hover the pointer over each image for more information about the idents.
Further permutations were introduced at various points during the 90s, which made use of a more varied colour palette. One new introduction in 1993, Crystal Ball (not shown here), lasted no more than a few weeks.
This is just a very small sample of the countless 'stings', or 'bumpers', used to punctuate trailers from around 1993 onwards. Each lasted just a few seconds, and tended to be somewhat more wacky in style than the main idents.
